Insurance Options
Many patients with cancer find it difficult to afford their treatments – even when they have health insurance. Current laws limit the amount a patient must pay for out-of-pocket costs; however, this is determined by the plan a cancer patient has selected and is enrolled in. Cancer treatment is often complex and lasts many months or years, involving numerous doctor’s visits, tests, surgeries, radiation treatments, drugs and other services. Cancer patients often meet their deductible soon after diagnosis because of all their required tests, procedures and the co-pays and co-insurance costs quickly add up after that.
As health care costs continue to rise and plans use co-insurance more, patients are responsible for significant costs even after they have met their deductible. Understanding your insurance coverage and if enrolling in other or supplemental insurance plans is an important consideration. The resources listed offer information on different types of available insurance coverage options.
