Russell Silverman has been involved in health care for over 50 years as a provider, on non-profit boards, and as a caregiver. A graduate of MIT with a BS in Economics, an MBA from Strayer University, and an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from HUC-JIR, he spent more than 20 years as a licensed administrator and owner of Green Briar Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, a long-term facility specializing in rehabilitation and transitioning to a sub-acute care facility with a 16-bed hospice unit. He served as an officer of the Florida Healthcare Association and received the Walter M. Johnson Circle of Excellence Award. He was the president of the Medical Services Consortium. He was a member of the board and executive committee of the Health Systems Agency of South Florida, served as a member of the Florida Statewide Health Coordinating Council, served as the treasurer of the National Spinal Cord Injury Association, and served as the vice-chair of the Miami-Dade County HIV-AIDS Task Force. He was the chair of the Committee of Older Adults for the URJ and was its board chair and CEO. Most recently, he was the administrator, executive director/CEO, and CFO for the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation (FBCF) for more than ten years. During his time as the executive director and CEO, the Foundation experienced a more than 250% increase in revenue, allowing it to expand its programs across Florida.

More than all of the management and non-profit board accomplishments, Russell’s personal life challenges have made his commitment to helping those patients and families affected by cancer. Russell’s wife was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma when Russell and his wife were in their 20s. Through radiation therapy and then chemotherapy, through 5 episodes of cancer with 4 different types of cancer, through all of the health problems that radiation and chemotherapy and cancer cause, and with his wife’s final diagnosis of stage 4 pancreatic cancer, Russell was her caregiver and advocate. He used his 42 years of experience as a caregiver to help others needing information and support when he served as the executive director of FBCF.
